Latest achievements and humanitarian work by Wangdowa Sherpa as a dedicated volunteer to help his impoverished village:
2013 established Friends of Himalayan Sherpa People, Inc., a 501C3 non-profit organization with trip members from Fall 2011 trip to his village Phapre, Okhaldunga and Solukhumbu, Nepal with the vision to help build a primary school, provide improved metal cooking stoves with smoke venting outside to replace open fire earths in village homes to improve people’s health and well-being and to organize medical missions to the village.
2013 to present Wangdowa Sherpa has been volunteering his time as the president (voluntary position) with Friends of Himalayan Sherpa People (FHSP) board members to raise funds and helped build a five-classroom school building in Phapre Village to provide quality education to the poor children there. Wangdowa along with FHSP board members visited Phapre in Spring 2014 and inaugurated the village school.
April 25, 2015 Nepal earthquake brought a devastating blow to Phapre area including the school building. Wangdowa has actively participated with FHSP board members to raise funds to help Phapre people live through the monsoon of 2015 by distributing 58 families with 116 tarpaulins (15 feet x 18 feet), raised funds and helped 16 surviving family members of 16 Langtang avalanche dead. The 16 deaths by Mount Langtang Lirung avalanche triggered by earthquake were breadwinners of the family from Patle VDC 3, 4 and 5, Rangani VDC, KhijiPhalate VDC, and Bushinga VDC.
Fall 2015 and spring 2016 Wangdowa returned to his village to assess and distribute earthquake rebuilding funds raised by FHSP and distributed to 42 families US$250 per family to rebuild their houses.
Wangdowa Sherpa with FHSP board fund raised, coordinated construction of the improved metal cooking stoves that vent smoke outside and distributed 50 stoves to Phapre and neighboring villages in fall 2016, 100 stoves to Phapre and neighboring villages in spring 2017, and 100 stoves to Phapre and neighboring villages in the spring of 2019.
With help of Friends of Himalayan Sherpa People board members, Wangdowa has successfully distributed 250 improved metal cooking stoves with smoke venting outside to Phapre and the surrounding villages to improve health and wellbeing of the people in the remote villages.
2016 December Wangdowa Sherpa has been elected Chairman of the School Management Committee (SMC) for Pikey PhaprePrimary School in Phapre, Patle-6, Okhaldunga, Nepal. A three-year voluntary position. In his capacity as chairman of SMC, he has helped to build road to Phapre school as it was the Nepal Government requirement to get government help to rebuild the April 25, 2015 earthquake damaged school.
2018 December Pikey PhaprePrimary School received US$35,000 to rebuild a three classroom Truss Building with complete design manual from Government of Nepal, National Reconstruction Authority, Central Level Project Implementation Unit (Edu.), District Level Project Implementation Unit (Edu.) Okhaldunga.
December 2018 Wangdowa prepared foundation for building the truss building and got inspected by engineers and approved by Government of Nepal.
February to May 2019 Wangdowa returned to Phapre village to build the three class room earthquake resilient trust building and completed in first place among 32 schools awarded in the district and received certification of completion from Government of Nepal, National Reconstruction Authority, Central Level Project Implementation Unit (Edu.), District Level Project Implementation Unit (Edu.), Okhaldunga.
May 2019 Wangdowa along with headmaster of Pikey PhaprePrimary School applied and lobbied for reconstruction of earthquake damaged toilet at Pikey PhaprePrimary School.June 2019 Pikey Phapre Primary School was awarded earthquake resilient toilet project of three rooms (Boys/Handicapped/Girls) which is estimated US$15,000.
September 2019 Wangdowa Sherpa returned to Nepal to sign to formalized the toilet project and started construction and stopped in mid-December as freezingprevented cementsetting.
2019 December Wangdowa Sherpa has been elected Chairman (three-year voluntary position) of the School Management Committee (SMC) for Pikey PhaprePrimary School in Phapre, Khijidemba-9, Okhaldunga, Province 1, Nepal.
February 2020 Wangdowa returned to the village to finish the toilet project and then stopped due to the emergency COVID-19 lock down. Work will resume when the project can be resumed safely.
After completion of Phapre village school and toilet buildings, Wangdowa will spend more time with his family and lead more exciting trips in the Himalaya and beyond.
